Is a little one on the way???
Family Paws, a Cary, NC based canine behavior and consulting company specializes in preparing growing families and their canine babies for the arrival of new babies.
"Ask a shelter volunteer how often they see companions surrendered when a couple is expecting a baby. It is shocking how common this is! People are afraid and do not know where to go for advice on safe Kid & k9 interaction,“ Jen Shryock, owner, trainer and canine behavior consultant of the company said. "For that reason, I decided to offer canine education and training services to families in our community. I want to help keep babies and kids safe and dogs in their homes."
Shryock and her husband Joe, with three children (6, 5 and 2), three dogs (two German Shepherds and one Golden Retriever) and two cats, understand first hand what is needed to keep children safe and life harmonious in a home with dogs. Shryock and her family volunteer with many local rescue groups including German Shepherd Rescue and Adoptions (GSR&A) and Neuse River Golden Retriever Rescue., and Second Chance. Shryock (former President of GSR&A) says “I have seen first hand the results of a lack of education regarding safe child and dog interaction. I want this to change! I want to help keep kids safe, and companions in their home.”
"As a trainer and volunteer, I've heard all the reasons why people want give up their dogs," Shryock said. "Families are concerned about ensuring safety for their kids, preventing dog bites and injuries but there have been few resources with both child and dog expertise available to help. That's why I created Family Paws."
Services for families with dogs include: "Preparing Your Pup for the Stork" Workshops, K9 and baby safety consultation, private family consultation, dog bite prevention programs for kids, canine temperament testing and behavior solutions. All services are available at Family Paws' location in Cary and consultation services are also available in a client's home.
Shryock is a graduate of Kutztown University where she obtained a duo Bachelor’s degree in Special Education and Elementary Education. She has worked with physically and mentally disabled children and adults for over 15 years. As a child, she grew up with six dogs and trained and showed them in both the breed show ring and obedience.
About seven years ago, she decided to be a stay at home mom and her desire to educate and help others grew. She became a member of the Nursing Mother’s Advisory Council and has counseled nursing Moms for over six years. Jennifer also has been a dedicated volunteer with the Welcome Baby program for the past three years. In April 2001, Shryock and her husband created Family Paws.
"Family Paws allows me to enjoy the best of both worlds! I believe the relationship between dogs within their family is precious and I am dedicated to the success of this relationship."
