New Plan Offers Seniors, Disabled Low Cost or Free Drugs

Senior Citizens and disabled persons on Medicare will now have the opportunity to get most of their prescription medications at a special discount beginning June 1. The program, referred to, as “Medicare-Approved Drug Discount Cards” is the first step in the Federal Medicare program to insure prescriptions for people on Medicare beginning 2006.

The program is a political football. Both sides of the political aisle are calling fouls in an attempt to either take credit or discredit the opposite party in this election year.

The program is a major new benefit for seniors, and seniors will do well to take advantage of the savings it provides. However, strong political and commercial interests are pressuring seniors to choose between dozens of choices available and this has had the effect of scaring many seniors away from considering these valuable discount cards.

Cutting through the red tape and political rhetoric is a new book “Understanding the New Medicare Prescription Discount Card” now available from Benefits Publications. This book joins other publications designed to assist consumers in saving money on pharmacy. Authored by Harry P. Thal, a Certified Senior Advisor and health insurance specialist, the reader is guided through the process of selecting the best card to suit his or her needs. The author provides a free certificate with each book. The reader is asked to complete a few basic questions on the certificate, and the publisher then sends by return mail recommendations as to the best discount card program for that particular person. This service is free for the first three medications, and a nominal charge ($1) for additional drugs.
