Breast Cancer Surgeon, Mitchell Levy, M.D., F.A.C.S. Leads Fight Against Breast Cancer

Dr. Mitchell Levy, M.D., F.A.C.S. of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, is so dedicated to winning the fight against breast cancer that he has devoted his entire surgical practice, exclusively, to breast cancer surgery. With a sterling reputation for his breast-saving surgical skills, Dr. Levy is also renowned for his comprehensive, diagnostic expertise, which is why women from around the world, diagnosed with breast cancer, consult with Dr. Levy for treatment and/or a second opinion.

Utilizing the most cutting-edge, advanced screening equipment in his comprehensive work-ups, Dr. Levy is currently one of the first doctors in the United State to own the new, dedicated, breast P.E.T. (Positron Emission Tomography) scanner. As part of his thorough examination for patients with ‘suspicious’ areas of concern, as well as for those already diagnosed with breast cancer, Dr. Levy is using this state of-the-art, diagnostic tool as an aid in staging, restaging and monitoring treatment when a change in therapy is contemplated. Additionally, the dedicated, breast P.E.T. scanner helps to quickly detect other breast cancers in that breast or the opposite breast.

“This is one of the most exciting new developments in the detection and treatment of breast cancer in many years,” says Dr. Levy. “A simple test, the dedicated, breast P.E.T. scanner, provides superior resolution to alternative scanning methods being used today, and therefore, is far more accurate. I will be using this breakthrough technology on all patients who come to see me for a second opinion.”

In addition to the new, dedicated breast P.E.T. scanner, Dr. Levy employs a multitude of diagnostic tools, to not only determine the ideal course of treatment for each one of his patients, but also to definitively rule out that the disease has not spread to another part of the body or to the other breast. Such additional tests may include a total body P.E.T. scan, a dedicated MRI of both breasts, an MRI of the chest, liver and abdomen and a bone scan.

While many surgeons may recommend an immediate lumpectomy or mastectomy as the only treatment option available to women diagnosed with breast cancer, Dr. Levy believes in collecting as much information as possible before performing surgery. While the additional diagnostic procedures that Dr. Levy performs are the exception, rather than the rule, he is convinced they are crucial in determining how to proceed with the ideal course of therapy for each patient.

In today’s environment of organized medicine, Dr. Levy not only offers personalized attention to his patients, but caring and concern as well. Understanding the special needs of patients diagnosed with breast cancer, he caters to them. In order to provide each patient with individual attention and quality care, he will see a patient within 24 hours if they have a problem. Dr. Levy sees his patients at least twice a year and, sometimes more frequently, the first six months following surgery.

A dedicated and skilled surgeon for more than 25 years, Dr. Levy is an ardent advocate for patients to seek a second opinion when diagnosed with breast cancer and is steadfast in his goal to educate women about all of the treatment options available to them before deciding upon surgery.

“A diagnosis of breast cancer is an overwhelming, emotional experience and raises many questions,” explains Dr. Levy. “A second opinion empowers patients with the information they need to make intelligent and important decisions regarding their future. When I see a patient who is seeking a second opinion, I confirm whether or not the initial diagnosis is correct and that all diagnostic and metastatic procedures have been performed to ensure that the best course of treatment has been offered to the patient.” Some patients may have additional cancers in the same breast or opposite breast and several new studies confirm that seeking a second opinion may make a big difference in a patient’s diagnosis and treatment.

First and foremost, Dr. Levy is a surgeon who is passionate in his commitment to conserving women’s breasts, saving women’s lives, and to winning the fight against breast cancer.
