Book Review: Goji, The Himalayan Health Secret

Much has been written lately concerning Asian health secrets. A recent edition of TimeAsia explored how the people of Asia seem to have the ability to live exceptionally long AND healthy lives. The headline read "The Science of Herbal Asian Medicine", and asked the question: "As researchers finally begin to unravel the secrets of traditional Asian medicine, ancient herbal remedies are being harnessed to combat a range of diseases from malaria to cancer. Could Asia's traditional medicine chest hold the cures to age-old ills-and can Western science finally unlock its secrets?"

A new book addresses one of those health secrets, known for centuries to the peoples of Central Asia: the goji berry. Poetry has been written about it, yearly celebrations held in tribute to it, and a myriad of studies conducted on its diverse health benefits. If you have not heard about it before, you are not alone, but this short book will introduce you to a little red berry about to have a huge impact on the Western world: Goji, The Himalayan Health Secret. The book is written by Earl Mindell, R.Ph., M.H., Ph.D., who is generally recognized as the world's leading nutritional authority, and has authored 50 books on nutrition, including The Vitamin Bible. It is co-authored by Rich Handel, regarded by many to be one of America's leading authorities on the formulation and manufacture of nutritional supplements. Since the scientific concepts are presented in a simple understandable way, this book of only 58 pages is a quick and enjoyable read.

In an introduction to the goji berry, the authors discuss the longevity of certain peoples. They even disclose that in some remote parts of the world, people use their coffins as storage bins for decades before needing them for the designed purpose. These inhabitants honor the goji berry for its "unmatched healing and protective powers" and as a potent anti-aging herb. This paperback explains the different types of goji berries, and explains how the berry has been analyzed scientifically in an attempt to find the best variety. Among the things scientists discovered were: (1) that it is quite possibly the most nutritionally dense food on earth; (2) by looking at the Spectral Signature, scientists found that the bioactive polysaccharides (complex carbohydrates that are defense mechanisms which are conferred on humans as we eat plants that are rich in them) contained in goji berries were different and more active than anything they had ever seen before; (3) that the goji berry originated from the Hima

The final chapter is arguably the most exciting. It lists scientific studies done using goji, a truly rare find in any herbal-product book, that show its benefits to allergies, anti-aging, arthritis, energy, cardiovascular health, diabetes, gastrointestinal disorders, hypertension, immunity, infertility, obesity, periodontal disease, sexual dysfunction, vision improvement, and for cancer prevention, cancer management, liver protection, and for an aid in blood production.
