Experienced Internal Medicine Doctor Tells People How to Prevent Dementia

dementia may be preventable. Stroke (vascular disease of the brain) and Alzheimer’s are no longer considered to be independent of each other but synergistic.

Brain Maintenance: How To Prevent Stroke and Delay Dementia written by Kathleen W. Wilson M.D. will be released October 2004. This book covers the most exciting news since the discovery of penicillin in the last century. While most people are fatalistic about whether they will get dementia later in life, research in the last two years has shown us that much of dementia may be preventable.

Stroke (vascular disease of the brain) and Alzheimer’s are no longer considered to be independent of each other but synergistic. Dr. Wilson tells people in plain English how to protect their brains by preventing stroke and other forms of brain damage. The first third of the book reviews the latest studies on how the brain works, The Nun Study, and studies over many years of what makes people happy and mentally successful later in life. She then tells clearly what Alzheimer’s disease, stroke and dementia are. Most significantly, she tells people the things they can do by midlife so they do not get dementia later on. Even if older people have a few changes of Alzheimer’s in the brain, it does not mean they will get dementia. This book will give you hope and a new outlook on your brain’s health. The book is 100 pages. Dr. Wilson explains these concepts well and concisely. It is spiced with stories in straight forward, easy-to-read prose.

Dr. Wilson attended medical school at the University of Iowa, trained for 5 years at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN., and has been a senior internal medicine doctor at Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans the past ten years. Before that she was a Lt. Col. in the medical corp of the US Air Force. She is board certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology. Dr. Wilson has a large full-time practice with thousands of patients. She describes her position as a medical doctor for 28 years as “a front seat in the drama of life.”

Dr. Wilson is also the author of Health For Midlife Women: When You Think You Are Falling Apart (October 2004) and Your Husband’s Health: Simplify Your Worry List (October, 2003)

Dispatches from the Frontlines of Medicine: Brain Maintenance: How To Prevent Stroke and Delay Dementia By Kathleen W. Wilson M.D. 101 pages. $14.95 ISBN 9742976-4-X. 2004. 100 pages; $14.95; paperback. Published by Whiskey Hollow Press
