New Treatment Promises to Correct HIV Induced Facial Wasting
HIV patients are living longer then ever through the advent of several new classes of anti-viral medications. These medications including the class of anti-viral protease inhibitors have been thought to be implicated in producing side effects that can cause loss of fat and redistribution of fat in various areas of the body of HIV infected patients. One of the most common side effects results is what has become known as facial wasting, a sunken cheek area producing a sallow gaunt and emaciated appearance. Facial wasting is a stigma of HIV infected individuals.
Despite the fact that many patients with HIV are healthy and robust with even undetectable viral loads, facial wasting has rapidly become a significant issue in the lives of those living with HIV. Self-image and self-esteem, can be challenged as a result of this obvious physical manifestation termed “facial wasting.” Until recently there has been no release from the stigma of HIV induced facial wasting. In the past remedies for the soft tissue atrophy of the face have included fat injections, off label liquid silicone injections, and facial implants. Now, an injectable implant called “Radiance™” is available and the HIV infected community couldn’t be happier.
As one of the first plastic surgeons in Manhattan, New York to offer Radiance™ and one the most experienced plastic surgeon in the use of Radiance™, Douglas M. Senderoff, MD, FACS, is able to achieve extraordinary results in reversing the appearance of HIV facial wasting. The advantage of Radiance is the potential for a long lasting effect—years not months and results are immediate. “I am pleased to be able to restore my patients’appearance as well as their self confidence” remarks Dr. Senderoff.
Douglas M. Senderoff, MD, FACS, a New York Plastic Surgeon with offices in Westchester and Manhattan, has treated scores of patients with facial wasting and reports that the results are immediate and long lasting with extremely high patient satisfaction.
