Healthy Kidneys Need Water, but Majority Aren't Drinking Recommended Amount, Survey Finds

Only 15 percent of people drink as much water daily as many in the medical field recommend to maintain overall good health and particularly kidney health, according to a new survey conducted by morefocus, an online research organization.

Although a majority of people sought some kind of treatment for their kidney issues, and made some effort to prevent future problems, it was still surprising to see the number of people who have essentially ignored their kidney problems
It is widely suggested by the medical community that drinking at least eight glasses of water per day is beneficial to overall health, and is particularly helpful for kidney function. However, 85 percent of those surveyed said they do not drink the recommended daily amount. Thirty-eight percent of respondents said they only drink half or less of the recommended amount of water each day.

"That's a pretty significant number of people who are really not even coming close to the recommended daily water intake," said Dr. Regan Carey, morefocus Research Director. "This may, in part, contribute to the high instances of kidney issues that were reported by the people who took the survey."

Seventy-one percent of those surveyed said they have experienced kidney pain. Thirty-six percent said they've had a kidney stone, while a majority, 68 percent have had a urinary tract infection.

The survey also explored how people deal with kidney pain. Of those surveyed who had experienced kidney pain, 63 percent used prescription medication for the pain, and 35 percent applied heat or cold to the area in an effort to relieve the pain. A surprisingly high number, 21 percent, said they have done nothing for their kidney pain.

Additionally, the survey found that 24 percent of respondents were not doing things like improving diet, increasing exercise, and increasing water consumption to help prevent kidney problems.

"Although a majority of people sought some kind of treatment for their kidney issues, and made some effort to prevent future problems, it was still surprising to see the number of people who have essentially ignored their kidney problems," said Dr. Carey. "This is particularly concerning given that the more serious kidney problems can lead to the need for an organ transplant."

The morefocus survey was commissioned by the publication
Kidney-Pain.com.
