ART Fertility Program of Alabama Celebrates 20th Anniversary
Collegiate football All-American Jay Barker and Miss America 2005 Deidre Downs will join hundreds of mothers, fathers and children on Saturday, May 13th to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the ART Fertility Program of Alabama, the largest infertility program in the state. Headquartered in Birmingham, ART has one of the highest success rates in the country for couples battling infertility and is a leader in utilizing cutting edge technologies to offer patients the most convenient and successful methods of assisted reproduction.
Infertility affects approximately one in six couples in the United States. With one of the highest success rates in the country and their low-cost shared risk program for IVF and egg recipients, the ART Fertility Program of Alabama assists couples with infertility to achieve their dream to have a child. In 1984, Dr. Kathryn Honea, founder of the ART Fertility Program, established and directed the first In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) program in Alabama, through which the first baby conceived by IVF was born in the state. Dr. Honea worked with General Electric to develop one of the first transvaginal non-surgical ultrasound egg retrieval systems which has become one of the standards in modern IVF programs, replacing the surgical egg retrieval process.
Currently, over 1,500 babies have been born to ART patients through IVF services and over 4,000 babies have been born through other assisted reproductive methods including ovulation induction and intrauterine insemination. All three ART physicians, Board Certified in infertility, have personally experienced reproductive health problems.

• Advanced surgical procedures – tubal repair, resection of endometriosis, myomectomy.
• Ovulation induction with intrauterine insemination
• Egg donation – for couples where the woman does not produce healthy eggs
• Sperm donation – for couples where the man does not produce sperm
• The ART Fertility Program Shared Risk Program (SRP) -- a unique plan that limits the financial risk if a live birth is not achieved.
