Clinical trials are an essential process for improving the survival rate & quality of life for people diagnosed with cancer. There are different trial stages:
Phase 1: The first step in testing a new approach in humans. Phase 2: For determining the safety and effectiveness of a new treatment. Phase 3: Comparing a new treatment to a standard therapy. Experimental or Investigational: A drug or procedure that has undergone basic laboratory testing and received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to be tested in human subjects. It may be approved by the FDA for use in one disease or condition, but be considered investigational in other diseases or conditions.
When insurers cover the cost of nationally sanctioned cancer clinical trials, they are investing in better standards of are for all patients. Ultimately, such trials reduce cancer recurrence and the amount of health care dollars spent on these cancer patients decreases.
