Why Do Most Diets Fail? How to Recognize the Underlying Causes of Food Cravings and Do Something
What do you crave? Potato Chips? Chocolate? Ice Cream? “Ironically the foods to which we’re sensitive are the ones that we most crave,” says Dr. Ellen Cutler, author of MicroMiracles: Discover the Healing Power of Enzymes (Rodale 2005) and The Food Allergy Cure. “Food cravings are a major reason that most diets fail. They won’t go away until we address their underlying cause which is food sensitivities or intolerance to certain foods. Many of us have some form of food sensitivities or intolerance.”
By clinical definition, a food sensitivity or intolerance is the inability to break down certain foods or food components. It’s different from a food allergy, in which certain foods or components trigger an immune response. The bottom line is that the body does not break down the foods that we are intolerant to – so we reach for more to the get the nutrients we need.
Dr. Cutler explains that there is a domino effect here – the body is not digesting properly, the nutritional requirements are not satisfied and no matter how much food we eat, the digestive process is functioning below par and we suffer the consequences of weight gain and other symptoms that can include: abdominal pain, headaches, rashes, runny nose, depression and mood swings, chronic cough, and asthma.
In MicroMiracles, Dr. Cutler says that this is where enzyme therapy can have a dramatic impact, by supporting thorough digestion of foods and proper absorption of nutrients. In her clinical work with enzymes, she says that patients almost find it unbelievable that for the first time in their lives, they don’t crave certain foods anymore. She says the results are also quick and they usually notice a difference within 48 hours.
Doctors can identify a genuine food allergy with laboratory tests, but there is no comparable test available for food sensitivities. Instead diagnosis depends on monitoring and interpreting symptoms. Pay attention to your food cravings? Those cravings are the clue to your food sensitivities. (The exception to this rule is during pregnancy which is a time where cravings are not related to sensitivities).
Dr. Cutler is adamant about getting to the heart of food cravings. She says that once this is addressed, the body will absorb the nutrients it needs and the healthy impact on the body will trigger the loss of those unwanted pounds. She believes that enzymes are the dietary supplement of the 21st century.
