The Recent Deaths in Turkey Have Brought the Threat of Bird Flu Much Closer to Home

The world is preparing but as I write we do not have enough antiviral drugs and we have no effective vaccine. How can we when we do not yet know the form the virus will eventually take?80% of the world is completely unprepared and even the more developed countries, including the US and the UK, have no plans to use antiviral drugs to stop their populations catching the disease in the first place. But this policy may be unsound and needs to be discussed openly.

At this crucial time Freelance researcher and writer John Piper releases a new and unique service! VIRUS ALERT! is not just a book about the impending Bird Flu pandemic but also a regular news sheet keeping readers informed "up to the minute" at no extra charge.

John comments, "There are other books on the market on bird flu but every one I have seen has been flawed in major ways." "In particular a number of books talk about a mortality rate of 50% but the fact is that as the virus evolves to become more adaptable to human physiology it will also become less deadly. This is already happening and the mortality rate was initially around 75% and has now dropped to nearer 30% in recent cases. It is likely to be less than 10% before the virus is capable of spreading quickly though human populations."But we cannot be complacent, even if the mortality rate is 5% we would still be talking about a huge number of people dying, perhaps 1 in 40. If the maths don't seem to work you must also factor in an infection rate of up to 50%.

Other books have got the facts wrong on Tamiflu, arguably the leading antiviral when it comes to bird flu. I have seen it reported that Roche only produce 1.5 million tablets a year, but this is clearly nonsense when the UK alone already have 3.3 million courses (a course consist of 10 tablets) and receive a further 800,00 courses every month.
The world is getting there, or rather some of the countries in the world are, but if the virus does hit in 2006 and if the infection rate is in excess of 25% with a the mortality rate in excess of 2% then medical services will be swamped and there will not be enough of the antiviral drugs to go round. This would lead to panic, a disruption of vital services, and many deaths. We need to take more action NOW! VIRUS ALERT! is filling a much needed gap, a book is not enough as the situation is too fast moving which is why we are also including our regular updates in the price.
