Parent Runs the New York City Marathon to Benefit Charity for Disadvantaged Teenagers
After committing enormous financial and emotional resources to send both of his teenage sons to Wilderness Programs and Therapeutic Schools, John Reuben decided to start a non-profit organization to help other "in crisis" teenagers.
Saving Teens In Crisis Collaborative (STICC) is the non-profit organization he formed in April of 2004 to assist disadvantaged troubled teens and families struggling with substance abuse and other emotional issues. Staffed entirely by volunteers, Saving Teens works with health organizations, educational consultants, wilderness programs, boarding schools,rehabilitation centers and educational lawyers to steer these families to the resources that they need, but did not know about and could not afford. Saving Teens leverages the expertise and generosity of dedicated professionals and caring institutions, and concerned parents to guide families toward a brighter future.
"The emotional difficulties that adolescents face in today’s society are often more than they can bear", states Reuben. "These challenges can be preceded by or become the cause of severe substance abuse and emotional problems."
Short-term residential and out-patient treatment programs often fail to alleviate the most severely affected teenagers, who require a more comprehensive, multi-stage, in-patient approach. Long-term programs, on the other hand, can be very successful as they address the fundamental issues facing these children, but they must be selected very carefully, and completed to full-term, often 18-24 months. They also can cost in excess of $150,000 per child and often are not covered by insurance.
Parents who attempt to get help for their children experience first-hand how difficult it is to navigate the labyrinth of guidance counselors, medical professionals, and educational consultants, even if they have the resources to afford all the expert advice. While there are a significant number of dedicated professionals and effective programs aimed at assisting teenagers with emotional and behavioral difficulties, there is no framework to guide financially challenged parents to the appropriate providers and see them through a long-term process from start to finish.
Saving Teens was founded to provide that framework, as well as the necessary financial assistance, by means of a comprehensive, multi-phase plan that incorporates both financial and emotional support throughout an 18-24 month process of evaluation, intervention and education. The Saving Teens methodology is different because it provides a long-term holistic approach which incorporates all of the professional disciplines—the medical professionals, educational consultants, wilderness programs, boarding schools, and rehabilitation centers—to evaluate, place, and fund a child into an appropriate sequence of programs and schools.
